The Russian Landscape
The first series of the project: the landscape of central Russia and the Russian North. Every frame is built the same way — a church on the horizon and a person looking at it.
The churches here are composite. White stone of the Vladimir-Suzdal kind, a northern wooden tented church, a monastery with corner towers — these are types of architecture, not addresses. No place in this series exists on the map, and there is no point looking for it: recognition is not the aim.
The person in the frame is the same across all fifteen subjects — a walker in a field jacket, seen from behind. He is what holds the series together: the landscape moves from golden autumn to a white night to a frozen lake, the figure stays. Real towns and real monuments belong to the other series, The Golden Ring.

Autumn Ochre fields, birches along a country road, a white single-domed church on a hill, and mist over the far river.
The White Sea Coast A Pomor village on a shingle shore, nets on poles, a wooden tented church, and open sea to the right.
White Nights Midnight dusk without a sun: a mirror-still river, a wooden tented church, and a pink-lilac glow above the horizon.
Monastery in Winter A frozen lake, a sledge track across the ice, and a monastery on the hill: whitewashed walls, five dark domes, a bell tower to the right.
